Food and Wine

The Papal Basilica Minor of St. Catherine, national monument, is one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Salento. The interior completely frescoed by Francesco d'Arezzo in 1435 make it a popular tourist destination. For the vastness of the pictorial cycles of these frescoes, the Galatina's Basilica is second only to the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
The Baroque Mother Church dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul is very interesting for its frescoes, splendid polychrome marble altars, the ancient chapel of the Sacramento, the valuable paintings, statues votive.
Another distinctive feature of the city is the small chapel of St. Paul. According to tradition, the well in which flowed water had the power to heal those who were bitten by spiders called tarantulas (in dialect, tarante).
According to tradition tarantati people carried out a musical exorcism at home; later, at the sounds and the rhythms of local music, they went to the chapel to invoke the Saint. Only after drinking the miraculous water it could be considered obtained grace and every year, June 28, returning to "renew" grace. So was born the annual recurrence of tarantate, still alive today thanks to the "Tarantismo" museum of Galatina. Still to be seen: nearby the town park there is a bronze fountain known as "Lamp without light" or La Pupa; the ancient gateway to the city Porta Luce and others present along the walls; The Church of the Souls of Purgatory, The Convent of the Poor Clares and the other 20 churches distributed in the old town; a lot of ancient noble buildings are highlighted and described along the way.
